Super Lube Aerosol Guide: Which Super Lube Aerosol Is Right for Your Application?

Choosing an aerosol lubricant is not simply about finding a product that is easy to spray.

Different applications require different types of lubrication. A mechanical assembly may need a lubricant that leaves behind a lasting lubricating film, while a rubber seal or weather stripping may require a silicone-based lubricant. Other applications may benefit from a dry lubricant that does not leave an oily surface.

Super Lube offers several aerosol formulations designed for these different needs. Understanding what each type is designed for can help you choose the right aerosol for the job.

1. Multi-Purpose Aerosol

What is it used for?

Super Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Lubricant is designed for general-purpose lubrication of parts that slide, roll, swivel or squeak.

The aerosol uses Super Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Grease with Syncolon® as its base. It is temporarily thinned with a solvent, allowing the lubricant to penetrate and reach areas that may be difficult to access with conventional grease. After application, the solvent evaporates and leaves behind a thin film of grease that provides long-term lubrication.

This makes it useful for applications such as:

  • Hinges

  • Latches

  • Locks

  • Sliding mechanisms

  • Moving mechanical parts

  • Linkages

  • Pulleys

  • General mechanical assemblies

  • Parts that slide, roll or swivel

Super Lube publishes a temperature range of -45°F to 450°F (-43°C to 232°C) for this lubricant. It is also NSF H1 registered for incidental food-contact applications.

The main advantage of this type of aerosol is the combination of easy spray application and a lasting lubricating film. The aerosol helps carry the lubricant into hard-to-reach areas, while the remaining film provides lubrication after the solvent has evaporated.

This is the Super Lube aerosol to consider when the application primarily needs general mechanical lubrication with a lasting film.

2. Dri-Film Aerosol

What is it used for?

Super Lube Dri-Film Aerosol is designed for applications where dry, clean lubrication is preferred over a conventional wet or oily lubricant.

The product contains sub-micron Syncolon® particles in a solvent base. The solvent carries the dry lubricant to the surface and evaporates rapidly, leaving behind a protective dry film that does not attract dust. Super Lube describes the coating as having a low coefficient of friction with good lubrication and release properties.

This makes Dri-Film particularly useful for applications where an oily surface could attract dust or where a dry lubricating surface is preferred.

Typical applications include:

  • Locks

  • Seat tracks

  • Window mechanisms

  • Sliding mechanisms

  • Mechanical surfaces requiring dry lubrication

  • Applications where a non-oily surface is preferred

  • Wood, paper, glass, rubber, fabric, leather and vinyl applications

Super Lube also states that the dry film provides resistance to oils, water and solvents and can provide anti-wear, rust and corrosion protection. The product is also suitable for use on electronics because the coating forms an insulating barrier.

The key difference between Dri-Film and a conventional multi-purpose aerosol is the type of film left on the surface. If the application needs lubrication without leaving a typical oily residue, a dry-film formulation may be more appropriate.

3. Silicone Aerosol

What is it used for?

Super Lube Silicone Aerosol is a general-purpose silicone-based aerosol lubricant primarily designed to reduce friction in non-load-bearing mechanical assemblies.

The silicone formulation is particularly relevant when the application involves rubber, vinyl, seals or other components where a silicone-based lubricant is appropriate. Super Lube states that the product is safe to use on rubber and vinyl, while also providing high dielectric properties and protection against rust and corrosion.

It can be used for applications involving:

  • O-rings

  • Rubber gaskets

  • Grommets

  • Weather stripping

  • Doors

  • Locks

  • Windows

  • Tools

  • Exercise equipment

  • Treadmills

  • Electronic equipment

  • Food manufacturing equipment

  • Certain sealing and insulation applications

Super Lube also describes applications involving electrical components, terminals, cable connections, spark plugs, pneumatic conveyor systems, control valves and other equipment where silicone lubrication and moisture resistance are useful.

The silicone base provides a moisture-resistant film that can help protect treated surfaces against water and corrosion while reducing binding and squeaking in moving components. The product is also NSF H1 registered for incidental food-contact applications.

However, Super Lube recommends caution when applying the product to certain plastics or finished surfaces because it may negatively affect painted or lacquered finishes. Testing on a small area before full application is therefore recommended.

This is the Super Lube aerosol to consider when the application needs silicone-based lubrication, particularly around rubber, vinyl, seals or moisture-sensitive components.

Choosing the Right Super Lube Aerosol

Super Lube's aerosol range is designed around different lubrication requirements rather than one spray being suitable for every application.

If you need general-purpose lubrication for moving mechanical parts and want the aerosol to leave behind a lasting lubricating film, Multi-Purpose Aerosol is designed for that type of application.

If the application calls for dry lubrication without a typical oily residue, Dri-Film Aerosol provides a dry-film alternative.

If the application involves rubber, vinyl, O-rings, weather stripping or other components where silicone-based lubrication is appropriate, Silicone Aerosol is designed for those applications.

The right choice starts with understanding the component, how it moves, the materials involved and whether the application requires a wet lubricating film, a dry film or silicone-based lubrication. Choosing the formulation that matches those conditions can help provide the lubrication and protection the application requires.
