Overview

Kroil 1 gallon (Kano SKU KL011) is liquid Kroil Original Penetrant in a can sized for maintenance departments, fleet shops and farms. Kano positions the liquid as the better-value format for high-volume use: soaking large assemblies or keeping a shop rag wet for wiping. The oil creeps into the smallest spaces, threads and openings around corroded parts, displaces moisture and leaves a lubricating film so frozen hardware comes apart with less force.

Key features

  • Kroil Original Penetrant, liquid, in a 1 gallon can
  • NSF Nonfood Compounds Program listed, category H2, registration #165745 (Kano lists the 8 oz and gallon sizes)
  • Petroleum-based; slightly reddish; flash point 132°F (55.5°C) TOC
  • Will not attack or damage metal; 50-state VOC compliant
  • Made in the U.S.A. (portions of packaging imported)

Where to use it

Soaking rusted bolts, chains and track pins, pillow blocks, gearbox and pump hardware, plumbing fixtures and valves, and equipment being torn down for repair. The H2 listing means it is acceptable for use around food-processing equipment where there is no possibility of food contact. Kano also notes the liquid has a lower vapor pressure than the aerosol and suits ventilated indoor shops.

How to use

  1. Keep the can closed when not pouring; when transferring, the SDS calls for grounding and bonding the containers and using non-sparking tools.
  2. Pour into a pan to soak small parts, or into a labeled oil can or drip bottle for spot work.
  3. Apply to threads and joints; allow 15 to 30 minutes, or several hours to overnight for heavy corrosion.
  4. Re-apply, then loosen the part with steady force while it is still wet.

Compatibility and cautions

Kroil is safe on steel, iron, aluminum, brass, copper and most alloys, and generally on most plastics and painted surfaces when used as directed. Long soaking may soften or swell some plastics and rubber, so keep rubber seals out of the bath. The SDS classifies Kroil as a flammable liquid and vapor (Category 3) that causes skin and serious eye irritation, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and may be fatal if swallowed and it enters the airways. Wear gloves and eye protection, ventilate, keep it away from ignition sources, and read the SDS. As a flammable liquid, it ships by ground only within the contiguous US (shipping policy).

Choosing between the gallon and smaller Kroil

For bench use, start with the Kroil KL081 8 oz drip bottle, which the gallon can refill. For spraying overhead or in the field, choose AeroKroil KS162, KS132 or KS102; per Kano, the aerosols carry the same Kroil Original. Want silicone in the mix? See SiliKroil SK102. All sizes are on our Kroil page.

FAQ

Why buy Kroil by the gallon?

Kano recommends liquid Kroil for high-volume work such as soaking large assemblies or using it with shop rags, and the gallon lets you refill smaller containers.

What does NSF H2 mean for Kroil?

Kano reports that Kroil Original in the 8 oz and gallon sizes is listed in the NSF Nonfood Compounds Program under category H2 (registration #165745). H2 products are for use where there is no possibility of food contact.

Is liquid Kroil the same as AeroKroil?

Yes. Kano says the exact same product is in all Kroil Original liquid and aerosol cans; the aerosol adds a carbon dioxide propellant.

How should I store a gallon of Kroil?

The SDS says to keep the container tightly closed and store it locked up in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from heat, sparks and flames.
