Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors

Dielectric grease is a non-conductive, water-resistant compound used to seal electrical connections against moisture, dirt and corrosion. This page gathers Super Lube 91003 Silicone Dielectric & Vacuum Grease (777 V/mil, -40°F to 500°F), Super Lube 82003 Anti-Corrosion & Connector Gel for battery terminals and exposed plugs, and 92003 silicone grease, which Super Lube describes as a dielectric formulation for electrical components and connectors. Use it on boots, seals, housings and exposed terminals; it protects a connection but does not replace a clean metal-to-metal contact.

Super Lube 91003 Silicone Dielectric & Vacuum Grease, 3 ozNLGI 2 silicone; 777 V/mil (ASTM D149)-40°F to 500°F (-40°C to 260°C)Spark plug boots, distributor caps, battery cables, bulb sockets, terminal strips, cable connections

Super Lube 92003 Silicone Lubricating Grease, 3 oz (also a 14.1 oz canister)NLGI 2 silicone with PTFE; 400 V/mil-40°F to 500°F (-40°C to 260°C)Connectors that also move or need lubrication, grommets, rubber and plastic parts

Where to use dielectric grease

  • Spark plug boots, distributor caps and ignition coil connectors
  • Plugs and connectors exposed to rain, washdown or salt water
  • Battery terminals and cable ends
  • Bulb sockets, light switches, fuse holders and terminal strips
  • Rubber gaskets and vacuum or pressure seals, since 91003 doubles as a vacuum grease

How to apply

  1. Disconnect power or the battery, then clean and dry the connector.
  2. Spread a thin, even film on the seal, boot or housing; with 82003, coat an exposed terminal until it is completely covered.
  3. Reconnect, wipe off the excess and re-apply as needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is dielectric grease conductive?

No. It is an electrical insulator: Super Lube rates 91003 at 777 V/mil dielectric strength. It protects the connection from moisture and corrosion rather than carrying current.

Is dielectric grease the same as silicone grease?

Often, but not always. 91003 is a silicone compound made for electrical and vacuum work, Super Lube also describes its 92003 silicone grease as a dielectric formulation, and 82003 is a connector gel that should not be used as a lubricant.

Can I use dielectric grease as thermal paste?

Use a heat sink compound instead. Super Lube specifies 98003 Heat Sink Compound (2.174 W/m·K) for moving heat from electrical devices to a heat sink, a use it does not list for 91003 or 82003.

Does dielectric grease work on battery terminals?

Yes. Super Lube lists battery cables among the uses of 91003 and battery terminals for 82003, which is made to coat exposed terminals and resist salt water.
