O-Ring Lubricant & Silicone O-Ring Grease

O-ring lubricant is a non-curing lubricant applied to seals during assembly to protect them from abrasion, pinching and cutting, help them seat, and keep them conditioned in service. Super Lube makes two dedicated products, 56204 O-Ring Silicone Lubricant (a 5,000 cSt fluid) and 93016 O-Ring Silicone Grease, and lists O-ring use for several other greases and sprays gathered here. Choose by seal material first: Super Lube rates its silicone O-ring products excellent on nitrile, EPDM, Viton and neoprene, but not compatible with silicone rubber.

How to choose an O-ring lubricant

ProductFormChoose it for
Super Lube 56204 O-Ring Silicone Lubricant, 4 ozNon-curing silicone fluid, 5,000 cStAssembly work, pneumatic O-rings, faucet and water-softener valves, pool pump and filter seals

91003 Dielectric & Vacuum Grease and 92003 Silicone GreaseSilicone grease, NLGI 2Seals on electrical, vacuum and pressure equipment; rubber parts and grommets
21030 Multi-Purpose Synthetic Grease (also ½ oz and 14.1 oz)PTFE synthetic grease, contains no siliconeO-ring lubrication where silicone must be kept out
91110 Silicone Spray, 11 ozAerosolO-rings, gaskets and grommets you cannot reach by hand; use caution on plastics and painted finishes

Where O-ring lubricant is used

  • Pneumatic cylinders, regulators and valve systems
  • Faucet valves and water-softener valves
  • Pool pump lids and filter seals
  • Vacuum chambers and pressure plug valves
  • Brake calipers, with the dedicated brake grease

How to lubricate an O-ring

  1. Clean the O-ring and its groove, and replace any seal that is cracked, nicked or flattened.
  2. Apply a thin, even coat; Super Lube's own directions are simply to clean the surfaces and apply evenly.
  3. Seat the O-ring without twisting it, then assemble.
  4. Wipe away excess so it does not collect dirt.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use silicone lubricant on silicone O-rings?

No. Super Lube lists silicone rubber (VMQ, MQ, FMQ, PMQ and VMFQ) as not compatible with 56204 and 93016. For silicone seals, use a silicone-free grease such as 21030, which Super Lube lists for O-ring lubrication, and confirm with the seal maker.

Can you use petroleum jelly on O-rings?

It is a poor choice for EPDM seals, which petroleum products can swell. A silicone O-ring lubricant that Super Lube rates excellent on EPDM, nitrile and Viton avoids that risk.

Liquid or grease for O-rings?

Use 56204 liquid for a thin film during assembly or on many small seals, and 93016 grease where you want a heavier layer that stays on static seals, valves and vacuum chamber seals.

Are Super Lube O-ring lubricants food grade?

Yes. 56204 and 93016 are both NSF H1 registered for incidental food contact (#156449 and #156444), and both list water-softener and faucet valves among their uses.
