Kroil Microil MC081 is a precision instrument lubricant in an 8 oz drip can, not a penetrating oil. The low-viscosity, low-evaporation mineral oil lubricates bearings and mechanisms in gauges, meters, clocks, micrometers, firearms and light machinery, lubricates to -50°F, and will not gum. Not flammable, and not classified as hazardous under OSHA.

Overview
Kroil Microil (Kano SKU MC081) is Kano Laboratories’ long-lasting precision instrument lubricant, packed in an 8 oz drip can. Despite the Kroil name, it is not a penetrant: where Kroil frees seized parts, Microil keeps small, freely moving mechanisms running smoothly. Kano describes a low-viscosity, low-evaporation formula that lubricates to -50°F, is non-corrosive and will not gum.
Key features
- Highly refined mineral oil (100%), amber, per the SDS
- Low viscosity: 28.8 cSt at 104°F (40°C)
- Lubricates to -50°F; low evaporation; will not gum (Kano)
- Non-corrosive; will not damage materials
- Flash point 327°F (164°C) COC; not flammable; 50-state VOC compliant
Where to use it
Kano lists bearings and mechanisms in precision instruments, gauges, meters, clocks, micrometers, counters, controls, firearms, light machinery, office machines and other small mechanisms. The drip spout puts single drops on pivots, small bearings and slides.
How to use
- Wipe old oil, dust and grit off the part with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Apply one drop at a time to the pivot, bearing or sliding surface.
- Operate the mechanism to work the oil in.
- Wipe away the excess so it does not collect dust.
Kano does not publish step-by-step directions for Microil; these are general good-practice steps for a light instrument oil.
Compatibility and cautions
Kano calls Microil non-corrosive and says it will not damage materials; still, test it on unusual plastics or finishes first. The SDS states it is not classified as hazardous under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard and is not flammable. Use it with adequate ventilation, wash with soap and water after use and keep the container closed, as the SDS advises. Read the SDS before use.
Choosing between Microil and Kroil penetrants
Microil is for routine lubrication of clean, working mechanisms. If a part is rusted or seized, free it first with a penetrant such as the Kroil KL081 drip bottle or AeroKroil KS162, then lubricate with Microil. For lasting lubrication on larger, weather-exposed hardware, consider SiliKroil SK102. For synthetic oils and greases, browse our greases and oils, and read Kroil vs Microil.
