DeoxIT DN5 (CAIG DN5S-6N) is a non-flammable contact cleaner spray with the same 5% DeoxIT D100L as D5, carried in a quick-dry, non-drip solvent with 0% VOC. CAIG designs it for delicate connectors and components on and in equipment, and says it will not swell rubber. 5.75 oz (163 g) can with a Low-Med-High valve; as an aerosol, it ships by ground only.

Overview

DeoxIT DN5 (part DN5S-6N) is the non-flammable member of CAIG Laboratories’ D-Series. Like DeoxIT D5, it deoxidizes, cleans, lubricates and protects metal electrical contacts, but it swaps D5’s mineral-spirits carrier for Solstice PF, a non-flammable solvent that dries quickly and does not drip. That makes DN5 the spray to reach for when you treat connectors in place, inside a chassis, near rubber parts, or anywhere a flammable solvent is unwelcome.

Key features

  • Non-flammable aerosol: 5% DeoxIT D100L, 75% Solstice PF carrier, 20% propellant (CAIG)
  • Same D100L chemistry as D5, with approximately 20% chemical deoxidizing action
  • Quick-dry, non-drip spray; 0% VOC; CAIG says it will not swell rubber
  • Low-Med-High valve; about 1,200 applications per 5.75 oz (163 g) can
  • Rated -29°F to 400°F (-34°C to 200°C); NSN 6850-01-519-5548

Where to use it

CAIG recommends DN5 for delicate connectors and components on and in equipment: computers, audio/video and communication gear, marine and RV electrical, avionics, medical, security and photography equipment, and automotive electrical systems. It suits contacts that are in service or visibly oxidized.

How to use

  1. Power down and unplug the equipment.
  2. Choose the valve setting and give the contact one short burst.
  3. Cycle the switch or connector to break up oxides, wait a few seconds and apply another short burst.
  4. Allow two minutes before switching the equipment on.
  5. Green or black discoloration over the next few days means dissolved oxidation from a badly oxidized surface; treat it again.

Compatibility and cautions

DN5 is safe on most plastics, but with the solvent present CAIG rates acrylic (PMMA) Poor, polystyrene Fair, and ABS and polycarbonate Fair to Good, so test clear acrylic lenses, windows and vintage ABS first. The carrier will not swell rubber, yet CAIG’s table still rates rubber, TPE and varnish Poor for DeoxIT itself, so avoid soaking them. Non-flammable does not mean hazard-free: the SDS warns the pressurized can may burst if heated (H229) and causes eye irritation (H320). Keep it out of sunlight and below 122°F (50°C), and read the label and SDS. As an aerosol, it ships by ground only within the contiguous US (shipping policy).

Choosing between DN5 and D5

Both sprays deliver the same 5% D100L. Pick DeoxIT D5 when you want its flushing action to wash loosened dirt off removed or easy-to-reach parts and flammability is not a concern. Pick DN5 for in-place work, rubber nearby, or VOC-restricted areas. For drop-by-drop treatment with no solvent at all, use the D100L-25C needle dispenser; for gold-plated or new contacts, use DeoxIT Gold G5. Our DeoxIT D-Series guide compares them side by side.

FAQ

Is DeoxIT DN5 really non-flammable?

Yes. CAIG's SDS states the product is not flammable, and CAIG lists DN5S-6N as non-flammable. It is still a pressurized can that may burst if heated, so keep it below 122°F (50°C).

Can DeoxIT cause a short circuit?

CAIG lists a dielectric strength of 341 V/mil (ASTM D877) for the D100L concentrate used in DN5. Its directions also call for powering down, unplugging and waiting two minutes after application before switching back on.

Will DeoxIT DN5 damage rubber or plastic?

CAIG says DN5 will not swell rubber and is safe on most plastics, but rates acrylic Poor and polystyrene Fair with the solvent present. Test a hidden area first.

Why choose DN5 over D5?

Choose DN5 when you need a non-flammable, quick-dry, non-drip spray with 0% VOC, for example on connectors inside equipment. D5 is the flammable, flushing-action version with the same 5% D100L.
