DeoxIT F5 FaderLube (CAIG F5S-H6) is a 5% spray lubricant for conductive-plastic faders, slide pots, carbon-based controls and other sliding contacts. Its flushing solvent washes out dust and drink residue, then leaves a thin film that restores lost lubrication. It is not a deoxidizer and not for metal connectors. 5 oz (142 g); flammable aerosol, ground shipping only.

Overview

DeoxIT F5, sold as FaderLube spray part F5S-H6, is CAIG Laboratories’ moving-contact lubricant for conductive plastic and carbon-based controls: faders, slide potentiometers, switches, conductive membranes and other mechanisms with sliding surfaces. These parts lose their original lubrication through wear, repeated cleaning, dust, smoke and spills. F5 flushes out loose contamination and replaces that lubrication so controls move smoothly again. CAIG is clear that DeoxIT Fader is not a deoxidizer.

Key features

  • 5% DeoxIT Fader F100L, 75% odorless mineral spirits, 20% difluoroethane (CAIG)
  • Flushing action; adjustable Low-Med-High valve with extension straw
  • About 1,000 applications per 5 oz (142 g) can
  • Rated -15°F to 302°F (-26°C to 150°C); NSN 6850-01-477-1528

Where to use it

Mixing-console and DJ faders, slide potentiometers and pots with carbon or conductive-plastic tracks, conductive membrane switches and mouse-pad style membranes, and sliding metal-to-plastic mechanisms. For metal contacts and connectors, use DeoxIT D-Series instead.

How to use

  1. Turn off and unplug the equipment.
  2. If metal parts of the control are oxidized, pre-treat them with DeoxIT D5 first, as CAIG directs.
  3. Set the valve, fit the extension straw and apply one short burst onto the plastic track.
  4. Move the fader or knob through its travel to distribute it, wait a few seconds and apply one more short burst.
  5. Wait two minutes before switching on. For extra tactile feel, finish with DeoxIT FaderGrease.

Compatibility and cautions

CAIG calls F5 safe on plastics, but with the solvent present ABS and polycarbonate rate Fair to Good and acrylic and polystyrene Fair, and rubber may swell until the solvent evaporates; test vintage ABS parts first. The SDS classifies the can as an extremely flammable aerosol (H222) that may burst if heated (H229) and an aspiration hazard (H304). CAIG notes it is flammable until the solvent evaporates, within 2–3 minutes. Keep it away from flames and sparks, store below 122°F (50°C), and read the label and SDS. Ships by ground only to the contiguous US (shipping policy).

FAQ

What is the difference between DeoxIT D5 and F5?

D5 is a deoxidizing contact cleaner for metal contacts and connectors. F5 is a lubricant for conductive-plastic and carbon-based faders and controls; CAIG says it is not a deoxidizer and not for metal contacts.

Which DeoxIT should I use on scratchy guitar or amp pots?

For the carbon or conductive-plastic track, CAIG specifies the F-Series, such as F5. If the pot's metal wiper or terminals are oxidized, CAIG says to pre-treat those metal parts with D5 first.

Does DeoxIT F5 clean faders?

Its solvent flushes out dust, dirt and drink residue, but the Fader concentrate itself has little or no chemical cleaning action (CAIG lists 0 to 1%). CAIG positions it as a lubricant that replaces what cleaning removed.

Is DeoxIT F5 safe on plastic faders?

Yes. CAIG formulated it for conductive plastics and calls it safe on plastics; with the solvent present, test acrylic, polystyrene and aging ABS first.
