DeoxIT D5 (CAIG part D5S-6) is a 5% contact cleaner spray that dissolves oxidation on metal electrical contacts and leaves a thin film that lubricates and protects them. Its flushing action and Low-Med-High valve suit switches, jacks, plugs and connectors you can reach or remove from the equipment. Flammable aerosol, ground shipping only.

Overview
DeoxIT D5 is CAIG Laboratories’ 5% spray of DeoxIT D-Series, sold as part D5S-6 (D5S-6-LMH on CAIG’s data sheet). It is a contact cleaner, deoxidizer, lubricant and protectant for metal electrical contacts that have been in service or show visible oxidation: crackling switches, noisy jacks, intermittent plugs and corroded connectors. The solvent flushes loosened oxide and dirt away, and a thin film of DeoxIT stays behind to protect the metal.
Key features
- 5% DeoxIT D100L, 75% odorless mineral spirits, 20% difluoroethane (CAIG data sheet)
- The D100L concentrate has approximately 20% chemical deoxidizing action, per CAIG
- Adjustable Low-Med-High (L-M-H) valve; about 1,200 applications per 5 oz (142 g) can
- Rated -29°F to 400°F (-34°C to 200°C); RoHS compliant; NSN 6850-01-435-6476
Where to use it
CAIG positions D5 for connectors and components that are removed from equipment or easy to reach. Typical jobs: switches, plugs and sockets, battery and charger contacts, audio/video connections, computer and communication connectors, power tool connections, and automotive, marine and avionics wiring.
How to use
- Switch the device off and unplug it.
- Apply one short burst to the contact or connector surface.
- Work the switch, plug or control several times, wait a few seconds, then apply a second short burst.
- Wait two minutes before powering the equipment back on.
- For severe oxidation, CAIG allows leaving D5 on overnight, wiping lifted residue with a lint-free swab the next day and finishing with a short burst, leaving only a thin layer.
Compatibility and cautions
CAIG rates D5 safe on most plastics but asks you to test sensitive parts and vintage equipment with aging ABS first; rubber may swell until the solvent evaporates. The SDS classifies the can as an extremely flammable aerosol (H222) that may burst if heated (H229) and may be fatal if swallowed and it enters the airways (H304). CAIG notes it stays flammable until the solvent evaporates, within 2–3 minutes. Keep it away from sparks and flames, store it below 122°F (50°C), and read the label and SDS. Aerosols ship by ground only within the contiguous US; see our shipping policy.
Choosing between D5 and other DeoxIT products
- DeoxIT DN5 non-flammable spray: the same 5% D100L in a quick-dry, non-drip, 0% VOC carrier for delicate connectors inside equipment.
- DeoxIT D100L-25C needle dispenser or D100L-2DB brush: 100% DeoxIT with no solvent and no flushing, for pin-point work where overspray matters.
- DeoxIT Gold G5: for gold-plated and new contacts; CAIG suggests it after D5 for longer protection indoors.
- DeoxIT F5 FaderLube: for conductive-plastic faders and carbon pots. It is not a deoxidizer.

FAQ
What is DeoxIT D5 used for?
It removes oxidation and corrosion from metal electrical contacts and leaves a thin protective, lubricating film. CAIG lists audio/video, computer, communication, automotive, marine and avionics connections among typical uses.
Is DeoxIT D5 safe on plastic?
CAIG rates it safe on most plastics. With the solvent present, ABS and polycarbonate rate Fair to Good and acrylic and polystyrene rate Fair, so test a hidden spot first, especially on vintage gear.
What is the difference between DeoxIT D5 and DN5?
Both contain 5% DeoxIT D100L. D5 uses a flammable mineral-spirits carrier with flushing action; DN5 uses a non-flammable, quick-dry, non-drip carrier with 0% VOC that CAIG says will not swell rubber.
Should I use D5 or F5 on a scratchy pot?
Use D5 on metal contacts such as switch contacts, jacks and plugs. For conductive-plastic or carbon tracks in faders and pots, CAIG specifies DeoxIT Fader F5, and says to pre-treat any oxidized metal parts of the control with D5 first.
Does DeoxIT D5 leave a residue?
Yes, by design. After the solvent evaporates, a thin film of DeoxIT stays on the contact to protect and lubricate it; CAIG advises removing any excess so only a thin layer remains.
