DeoxIT Gold G5 (CAIG G5S-6) is a 5% contact enhancer spray for gold-plated and other plated or precious-metal contacts. It conditions, lubricates and seals the surface to help prevent fretting and dendrite corrosion on new or clean connections, with only light cleaning action. 5 oz (142 g) can with L-M-H valve; flammable aerosol, ground shipping only.

Overview

DeoxIT Gold G5, part G5S-6, is CAIG Laboratories’ contact enhancer, conditioner and protector for plated metal surfaces. Where DeoxIT D5 is built to dissolve heavy oxidation, Gold G5 has only about 0.5% deoxidizing action and is meant to keep good contacts good: it improves conductivity, lubricates, and seals out oxygen on gold, silver, rhodium, copper, bronze and nickel surfaces. CAIG recommends it for new surfaces, gold-plated connectors and critical applications.

Key features

  • 5% DeoxIT Gold G100L in odorless mineral spirits with difluoroethane (CAIG data sheet)
  • Helps prevent fretting and dendrite corrosion; suits stationary and vibrating connections
  • Low-Med-High valve; about 1,200 applications per 5 oz (142 g) can
  • Rated -29°F to 400°F (-34°C to 200°C); NSN 6850-01-435-6475

Where to use it

Use it on gold-plated connectors, switches and contacts in audio/video, computer and communication equipment, and on new or freshly cleaned contacts you want to protect. CAIG notes it suits connectors and components that are removed from equipment or easy to reach.

How to use

  1. Turn off and unplug the device.
  2. If the contact has been in service or shows oxidation, pre-treat it with a DeoxIT D-Series product such as D5, as CAIG directs.
  3. Apply one short burst of Gold G5 to the contact.
  4. Operate the part to spread the treatment, wait a few seconds and apply another short burst.
  5. Wait two minutes before powering on. To limit overspray, spray onto a lint-free swab and wipe it on.

Compatibility and cautions

CAIG rates G5 safe on most plastics; with the solvent present, ABS and polycarbonate rate Fair to Good and acrylic and polystyrene Fair, and rubber may swell until the solvent evaporates. Test vintage ABS first. The SDS classifies the can as an extremely flammable aerosol (H222), a pressurized container that may burst if heated (H229), and an aspiration hazard (H304). Keep it away from flames and sparks, store below 122°F (50°C), and read the label and SDS. Ground shipping only, contiguous US (shipping policy).

Choosing between DeoxIT Gold and DeoxIT D-Series

Use DeoxIT D5, or the non-flammable DeoxIT DN5, to clean oxidized, in-service contacts: D-Series has about 20% deoxidizing action against Gold’s 0.5%. Use Gold G5 on new or plated contacts, or after D5 for longer indoor protection. For pin-point work without spray, the 100% D100L-25C handles the cleaning step. For conductive-plastic faders, neither is right; use DeoxIT F5 FaderLube. More in our DeoxIT D-Series and Gold guide.

FAQ

What is the difference between DeoxIT and DeoxIT Gold?

DeoxIT D-Series is the cleaner, with about 20% deoxidizing action for oxidized, in-service contacts. DeoxIT Gold is the conditioner and protector for plated and new contacts, with about 0.5% deoxidizing action.

Can I use DeoxIT Gold on oxidized contacts?

Clean them first. CAIG's directions say to pre-treat in-service or visibly oxidized surfaces with DeoxIT D-Series, then apply Gold.

Is DeoxIT Gold only for gold contacts?

No. CAIG lists gold, silver, rhodium, copper, bronze and nickel among the plated and precious-metal surfaces it treats.

Is DeoxIT Gold G5 flammable?

Yes. The G5S-6 SDS classifies it as an extremely flammable aerosol, and CAIG notes it stays flammable until the solvent evaporates. Keep it away from ignition sources and heat.
